Social Network Data: How Far is Too Far?

Monday, Jan 28 2008

One of the most thought provoking articles that I’ve come across in a while appeared in the January 21, 2008 issue of AdAge Magazine (http://adage.com/abstract.php?article_id=123200). Essentially the article talks about two very different worlds that are rapidly converging within the social network space.

The First World: The need for consumers to find a way to effectively manage all of their growing social media activities and needs. In short, the ability to share data between these social media outlets to provide convenience and simplicity. There are multiple startups trying to address this issue.

The Second World: The marketers who are trying to mine this personal data to effectively reach this very hard to reach group.

In the middle? The privacy police and consumer advocacy groups.

Want to keep track of the ongoing debate about open data standards within the social network space?

www.dataportability.org is a website that has been set up specifically for the discussion of this issue.
